To all Parents - Info re Census, Subs and Capitation.
The time is almost upon us to undertake our annual census to determine how many young people are involved in the group as a whole (currently about 150). This is so the Scout Association, Nationally, County and District can determine our Capitation fee, or simply put, tax per individual involved. This year it will be somewhere around £35 per head i.e. over £5,000. Subs currently are £25 per quarter or £2.50 per 'active' week and there are no current plans to increase this. So, you can see that out of the £100 per annum you pay for your child, we are paying over a third of this to keep the Scout association as a whole, up and running. In addition we have to pay a considerable amount for insuring the premises we own at Ravens Lodge, Insurance for liability of individuals involved with the group and third party liability, building and grounds maintenance, and essential services costs i.e gas and electricity. Not a lot left out of the £100.
We are having a budget planning meeting early in the New Year to determine any large expenditures the Sections wish to make during the year on e.g. camps, equipment, events, activities, visits etc so that we can then decide how much fund raising needs to be done to assist in the funding of this. Incidentally, whilst we ask for contributions for activities more than likely these are already subsidised such as the bus fare to Harvey Hadden in November.
So, as you can see, £2.50 per week represents good value for money in respect of the day to day facilities we provide at Larch Farm Scouts but from time to time we do need to ask for activities to be funded by parents, recognising that some parents who have more than one child in the group may often find this a little difficult.
If parents have any good ideas for fund-raising in the forthcoming year I would be most grateful for the input. Just email
